France's Premier Sébastien Lecornu Resigns Following Less Than a 30-Day Period in the Role

The French Premier Sébastien Lecornu has resigned, under 24 hours after his government team was announced.

The presidential office made the announcement after the Prime Minister met President Emmanuel Macron for an hour on the start of the week.

This surprising decision comes only less than a month after he was appointed prime minister following the collapse of the prior administration of his predecessor.

Various groups in the National Assembly had sharply condemned the structure of Lecornu's cabinet, which was largely unchanged to the previous one, and promised to block its approval.

Calls for Early Elections and Government Instability

Several parties are now clamouring for early elections, with others urging Macron to step down as well - despite the fact that he has always said he will not resign before his time in office finishes in 2027.

"The President needs to pick: calling new elections or resignation," said Chenu, one of key representatives of the far right National Rally (RN).

The outgoing PM - the former armed forces minister and a ally of the President - was the fifth premier in less than 24 months.

Background of Government Crisis

The nation's governance has been markedly turbulent since last summer, when sudden national voting resulted in a hung parliament.

This has made it difficult for any prime minister to garner the necessary support to enact new laws.

The former cabinet was defeated in September after parliament voted against his spending cuts plan, which aimed to cut state costs by $51 billion.

Financial Pressures and Market Response

The nation's budget gap stood at nearly 6% of the economy in the current year and its government debt is 114 percent of GDP.

That is the third largest government debt in the European monetary union after Greece and Italy, and amounting to almost 50k euros for each resident.

Share prices dropped in the Paris exchange after the resignation report broke on the start of the week.
